The Magic of Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossoms have a beauty that is ethereal, gentle, feminine and innocent. Delicate as they are, they can powerfully induce a sense of enthrallment when gazing at them. Just being around cherry blossoms can help you to receive a transmission of their healing energies.

Like narcissus, which was talked about in the last post, cherry blossoms are synonymous with spring. They represent renewal, new beginnings, youth and hope.

They are closely linked with Japan, as cherry blossoms (sakura) are their national flower and the celebratory tradition of hanami (flower viewing) has carried on for hundreds of years.

In Japanese culture, sakura represent the concept of mono no aware, which is the wistful acknowledgment of the transience of life. As soon as they bloom, sakura petals fall gently like snow in the breeze. Their existence is fleeting and transient. They therefore also signify how precious life is, and remind us to enjoy it all while we can.

Also like the narcissus, sakura have a connection to the Otherworld. In Japan, the arrival of spring is not only a time to celebrate new life. It is also when the dead are remembered, and the spirits of the land (including the ones in or near sakura trees) are prayed to for abundant crops. Perhaps this signifies how life and death are always intertwined.

It is interesting to note Japan is known as the “Land of the Rising Sun”, as the Sun rises in the East. In some pagan traditions, the East is linked to spring. How appropriate then, that their national flower is connected with springtime! The East is also linked to the element Air, and sakura are indeed light and “airy” flowers.

The popular Japanese anime “One Piece” shows another way sakura are regarded in their culture. They are portrayed as heart-healers. In the story, there is a man who was a thief. He found out he had a terminal, incurable heart disease, and was full of rage and despair over the situation.

But one day in the mountains, he saw sakura for the first time. The sight of it elated him so much that he was miraculously cured. He was then inspired to become a doctor, and his life mission was to figure out a way to make sakura bloom in a kingdom that always snowed. The country was in crisis, and he wanted to heal the hearts of the nation. He believed the sight of sakura would save the kingdom.

He eventually died, but his life work and his legacy was carried out. The miracle of sakura was received by the kingdom, and it was reborn with a new name- “Sakura Kingdom”.

Magical Uses of Cherry Blossoms

The cherry is a fruit that has been corresponded with Venus, so it makes sense that cherries and cherry blossoms are used for romance and love spells.

Scott Cunningham shares: “A beautiful Japanese spell to find love is simple: tie a single strand of your hair to a blossoming cherry tree”.

Tess Whitehurst states in her book "The Magic of Trees" how they can help us to connect with goddess energy: “In addition to being ruled by the planet Venus and sacred to the goddess of love, the cherry tree is a symbol of the Japanese goddess Konohana-sakuya Hime, who is considered a divine foremother of the human race.

Indeed, the cherry tree is a potent powerhouse of divine feminine energy and can assist us in getting in touch with the goddess within..."

Sit or walk near a cherry blossom tree while it is blooming to take in its sweet, gentle, otherworldly, heart-healing and feminine energy. Bring some into your home, in a bouquet or on your altar. Take it as a flower essence, or plant a tree in your garden. Its medicine is gentle, but potent!

The Magic of Narcissus

Shaped like trumpets, narcissus (also known as daffodils), are among the very first flowers of spring. They announce the new season, with their bright yellow petals bringing cheer.

Synonymous with early spring, narcissus represents rebirth, renewal, beginnings, fertility, vibrancy and hope.

To me, they are also equivalent with Aries- the first sign in the zodiac which is an initiator, strong, fiery and forward moving.

And like an innocent maiden, narcissus is bright, cheerful, and beautiful yet not pretentious.

Some varieties of narcissus are unscented, and the ones that are scented (usually the small ones) are ethereally sweet. Tess Whitehurst (author of “The Magic of Flowers”) describes its quality well:

“If you simply relax and tune in after inhaling his fresh fragrance, you’ll receive a wordless, organic sermon on the sweetness and magic of life. The floodgates to the miraculous will be lifted for you, and beings of light and love will whisper messages of hope and renewal from just beyond the veil. Even if you aren’t consciously aware of it, it is happening."

The Origins and Meaning of the Name

Narcissus is the name of a beautiful youth in Greek mythology. Forest nymphs admired his beauty and fell in love with him, but he was too self-absorbed to have any interest in them and he rejected them.

One day, he saw his reflection for the first time in a pool of water, and was transfixed  and enamoured by his own image. This led to his demise, and some versions of the story say a narcissus flower (named after him) was found in the place where he had died.

Based on its name, it is not surprising that narcissus is held to be a flower that encourages self-love.

It is supposed that “narcissus” is derived from “narkeo” in Greek, which means “numbness”- referring to the flower’s narcotic effect. It is indeed an intoxicating flower, and needs to be handled and used with care.

Magical Uses

According to Tess Whitehurst, here are the magical uses of narcissus:

Connection to the Otherworld
It is held that the in-between times are times when the veil between worlds is thin. Therefore, this springtime flower could connect us with beings beyond this realm.

Freedom from the Past

Present-Moment Awareness

Reclaiming Personal Power

Self-Love

Spiritual Refreshment

Romantic Love
By strengthening our love for ourselves, we are better able to strengthen our relationships with others.

Ideas for Working Magically with Narcissus

-Gift someone with a bouquet of narcissus to bring them cheer. Or give the gift to yourself!

-There is a belief that if you put a bouquet on your nightstand, it will increase your fertility (for those who would like to conceive). Ooh la la!

-Use narcissus essential oil and a base oil (like jojoba, sweet almond or olive) to create a natural perfume. Charge the bottle under a full moon in Aries. Use it to enjoy its sweet scent and to hold more self-love, personal power and/or vitality. Remember not to use too much!

-Plant narcissus bulbs in a pot or in your garden with the intention to grow your self-love.

-Keep the flowers near you (in your garden or a bouquet at home) or take it as a flower essence for self-love.

-Get a bouquet of scented narcissus (paper whites are perfect) to enjoy their heavenly scent and receive a “wordless sermon” from beyond the veil.
